Mereeba Rock Wallaby

The Mareeba Rock Wallaby (Petrogale mareeba) is a small, agile marsupial found only in a restricted range around Mareeba and Kuranda in Far North Queensland — making it one of Australia’s more localised and lesser-known wallaby species. Perfectly adapted to its rocky habitat, it navigates steep boulder fields and cliff faces with remarkable sure-footedness, using its long tail for balance and its textured paw pads for grip. Like many of Australia’s rock wallaby species, the Mareeba Rock Wallaby is most active in the early morning and late afternoon, retreating to the shade of rock overhangs and caves during the heat of the day. These photographs capture this charming and little-seen marsupial in its rugged tropical Queensland habitat.
